“Prune what is turgid, elevate what is commonplace, arrange what is disorderly, introduce rhythm where the language is harsh, modify where it is too absolute.” — Marcus Fabius Quintilianus
The editing services I offer fall into three categories: proofreading, copyediting, and substantive editing and rewriting. I have worked with many writers on a variety of writing projects; however, I particularly enjoy editing short story collections, novels, memoirs, and dissertations.
Proofreading: Looking for errors in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar and formatting. Typically, proofreading is the very last stage before your project is complete.
Copyediting: Checking for grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, formatting, and conformance to style guidelines; at client request, editing sentences to remove passive voice, ambiguous references, awkward transitions, and wordiness. If you have a good copyeditor, your manuscript will sound just like the original, but better.
Substantive Editing: Rearranging and rewriting paragraphs as necessary to improve clarity and flow of ideas; editing sentences to remove passive voice, ambiguous references, awkward transitions, and wordiness.
In addition, I offer the occasional writing workshop, as well as tutoring sessions and creative consultation by the hour.
